Biography

Tom Bird undertook medical training at Oxford, where he was actively engaged in research on immunology and infectious diseases. He chose to specialize clinically in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, completing a Wellcome Trust funded PhD at the MRC Centre for Inflammation Research in Edinburgh, focusing on liver regeneration. Following completion of his specialist training, he was awarded a Lecturer position at the University of Edinburgh and subsequently received a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellowship, which enabled him to establish an independent research group at the CRUK Beatson Institute in Glasgow. Afterward, he was awarded Senior Clinical Lecturer status at Glasgow and was promoted to Readership at Edinburgh University in 2020. His research employs cutting-edge genetically engineered preclinical models to study the basic biology of liver cancer, aiming to enhance therapeutic outcomes for patients. His work primarily spotlighted hepatocellular carcinoma, utilizing precision medicine to develop targeted therapies for this heterogeneous cancer type.
