Biography

Tom Bishop is a Senior Technical Operations Manager at the University of Manchester, involved in managing the School of Education, Environment, Development Laboratories. His primary responsibilities include ensuring the safe and efficient running of laboratories, providing highly skilled professional services. Tom specializes in palaeoentomology, X-ray fluorescence analysis of environmental samples, sample preparation, and statistical analytical methods. He studied Geography at the University of Manchester and earned a PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Southampton, focusing on the Holocene palaeoenvironment of southernmost South America. His career has included a variety of technical roles and extensive field and laboratory work, with methodological expertise in working with chironomids, radiometric dating, tephrochronologies, and investigations into metal pollution in soils and environmental carbon inventories. He employs both basic limnological methods, including profiling, and palynological methods involving diatoms and macroinvertebrates, along with freshwater biological methods assessing environmental microplastics. Tom's work aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, contributing to global efforts for poverty reduction and environmental protection.
