Dr. Tom Buchanan

Biography

Tom Buchanan is a leading historian specializing in 20th-century British and European history. Educated at Wadham College, Oxford, he earned a BA in History in 1982 and a DPhil from St Antony's College in 1987. Joining the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education in 1990, he has been a Director of Studies in History and has taught various courses focused on 19th and 20th-century British and European history, with a particular emphasis on mid-20th-century Europe. His research primarily examines the political and social interactions between Britain and the wider world during the 20th century. Buchanan has published extensively, including books and numerous articles on the impact of the Spanish Civil War in Britain. His notable works include 'East Wind: China and the British Left, 1925-1976' and 'Amnesty International and Human Rights Activism in Post-war Britain, 1945-1977'. He has been involved in various academic seminars and conferences and has co-edited volumes related to European history. Currently, he is completing a collection of essays on British involvement in the Spanish Civil War.
