Biography

Tom Carruthers is an architect, artist, and co-founder of Dream Combine. His collaborative practice produces site-specific installations that explore metaphor, imaginary environments, and perceptual uncertainties, blurring the boundaries between real and illusory space. Carruthers' spatial critiques respond to the socio-political dimensions of sites, destabilizing conventional understandings of the world. In recognition of his creative contributions, he was named a 2023 Emerging Voice by the Architectural League, a fellow of the 2022–2023 Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome, and received several prestigious awards including the 2021 Visual Artist Fellowship from the McKnight Foundation. His work has been widely exhibited, including at the 2023 Venice Biennale and the Museum of Modern Art. Carruthers' writings and interviews have been featured in several prominent publications within the field of architecture. Upcoming exhibitions include a significant artwork at the Metropolitan Museum focusing on African-American artists in Egypt, set to open in November 2024.
