Biography

Tom Craven completed his PhD in biophotonics and lung inflammation in 2017 and was awarded the research gold medal by the Intensive Care Society for his work. He became a Consultant in Critical Care at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2019 and was appointed as a National Research Scotland Fellow in 2020. His research focuses on examining novel optical strategies for the diagnosis, stratification, and treatment of critical respiratory illnesses, particularly ventilator-associated pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. In 2021, he received the Principal’s medal for his significant contributions to the STOPCOVID research collaboration. Additionally, he serves as the dissertation programme director for the MSc in Critical Care and is the course organizer for the BMedSci in Anaesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine. He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, actively involved in academic teaching and mentorship.
