Tom Daems is a professor at the Leuven Institute of Criminology (LINC), KU Leuven. He previously taught criminology and sociology of law at Ghent University. Daems has held visiting scholar positions at the University of Edinburgh (2009), the University of Nottingham (2010), and the London School of Economics (LSE) (2014 and 2018). He studied European criminology and political science at KU Leuven and LSE. His academic interests focus on sociological, legal, and normative issues related to punishment. His doctoral thesis, later published as "Making Sense of Penal Change" in the Clarendon Studies in Criminology series by Oxford University Press in 2008, won the Willem Nagel Prize from the Dutch Society of Criminology (NVC) and the Denis Carroll Prize from the International Society of Criminology (ISC) in 2009. Daems' research and publications cover themes related to punishment, including prisons, restorative justice, and electronic monitoring. Some of his recent books include "European Penology?" (2013), "Criminology: Selected Essays of Stanley Cohen" (2016), "Europe Prisons" (2017), "Europa waakt" (2018), and "Privatising Punishment in Europe?" (2018). Currently, he is working on a book titled "Victims: Sociology Aftermath Crime" for the Routledge Key Ideas in Criminology series. Within LINC, Daems coordinates research line 8 on 'Punishment and Control,' focusing on comparative and European penology and prison studies.
