Biography

Tom Gunton is a Professor and Director of the Resource Environmental Planning Program at Simon Fraser University. He has extensive professional experience, having served as Deputy Minister for several wings of the Government of British Columbia, including Environment, Lands and Parks, and Finance. He has played key roles in managing major natural resource project developments and was a chief negotiator for major development projects within British Columbia. He regularly advises both private and public sector clients and has been influential in significant environmental policy initiatives such as the new Environmental Assessment Act and the expansion of provincial parks systems. Gunton is also an expert witness for regulatory agencies and has contributed over 100 peer-reviewed articles and reports on resource and environmental policy. His teaching includes courses on public engagement and mediation in planning, and he is a member of the BC government's Climate Solutions Council.
