Biography

Tom Lea is a skeletal muscle physiologist whose research focuses on the effects of skeletal muscle diseases on muscle function, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He completed his PhD at the University of Western Australia, where he explored the involvement of hypochlorous acid in the disease pathology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Tom collaborates closely with Associate Professor Tony Bakker and their lab group, employing a range of experimental techniques to investigate whole muscle function, isolated myofibre function, and intracellular Ca 2+ signaling to elucidate the mechanisms of muscle dysfunction in various disease states. He supervises several research students and teaches an undergraduate physiology degree, contributing significantly to the academic community and research in muscular pathologies.
