Biography

Tom Long is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Warwick, where he has been a faculty member since September 2017. His research primarily delves into the dynamics of asymmetrical relationships in International Relations, with a particular emphasis on the agency of relatively weaker states. His empirical work focuses on Latin America and inter-American relations, involving significant themes in international organizations and the influence of small states. Long has led an AHRC-funded project on Latin America’s role in shaping international order in the late nineteenth century and has coordinated the Latin America Warwick Network. He has also served as a visiting scholar in esteemed institutions such as the Fundação Getúlio Vargas in Rio de Janeiro and the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile. Long has published extensively in top-tier journals and authored several books, including 'Small State's Guide to Influence World Politics' and 'Latin America Confronts the United States'. He is dedicated to doctoral supervision and is currently accepting new supervisees. In addition to his research, Long teaches various modules on Latin American politics and International Relations.
