Tom completed his PhD in 2016 at the University of South Australia under the supervision of Professor Thomas Nann, working on nanocrystal synthesis for solar cells. He held a short postdoctoral position with Professor Ivan Parkin in the Department of Chemistry at University College London (UCL), focusing on nanoparticle synthesis. In 2017, Tom was awarded the Ramsay Memorial Fellowship at UCL, where he developed innovative synthetic routes for perovskite nanocrystals and uncovered new insights into the role of carbon nanotubes in perovskite solar cells. In 2019, he received the 1851 Research Fellowship at Imperial College London (Department of Chemistry), which advanced the field of perovskite solar cells and developed a phosphorene nanoribbon optoelectronic device. By 2022, Tom joined Queen Mary University of London as a Proleptic Lecturer and was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. He returned to UCL in 2024 as an Associate Professor and Royal Society University Research Fellow.
