Dr. Tom Mcfarlane

Biography

Tom McFarlane is an Associate Professor, Teaching Stream, at the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo. His teaching specializes in oncology, internal medicine, and autoimmunity topics for undergraduate students. His particular research interests include gastrointestinal, lung, and prostate cancers, focusing on practice-based research that explores ways to improve supportive care regimens for patients and the overall impact of supportive care on health outcomes. He has a keen interest in qualitative research that examines patient attitudes towards cancer care. Professor McFarlane serves on numerous committees related to pharmacy education and practice, including the Assessment, Admissions, and Petitions Committees at the School of Pharmacy. He is actively involved in the Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology (CAPhO), contributing to several committees and serving on the CAPhO Board of Directors. His notable courses taught include Integrated Patient Focused Care and Drug-Induced Disease, reflecting his commitment to training future pharmacy professionals. Over the years, Dr. McFarlane has made significant contributions to oncology pharmacy through various publications that address critical issues in cancer treatment and pharmacy practice.
