Tom McKinnon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology and Inflammation at Imperial College London, focusing his research on thrombosis and haemostasis. His PhD research, conducted under Professor Mike Laffan, examined the role of glycosylation in the structure and function of Von Willebrand Factor (VWF). In 2011, he was awarded a British Heart Foundation Intermediate Basic Science Fellowship to investigate the functional role of the C-terminal domains of VWF. He leads a group that includes postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, focusing on VWF's role in bleeding disorders such as Von Willebrand's disease, and explores VWF interactions for potential anti-thrombotic targets. His research has received funding from various organizations including the British Heart Foundation, Kidney Research UK, and Apollo Therapeutics, and he has developed novel strategies to safely inhibit VWF function. Recently, his work has expanded to investigate the impact of microplastic particles on vascular haemostatic systems, collaborating with colleagues from Imperial’s School of Public Health and National Heart and Lung Institute. McKinnon is also the course director for a new MRes in Experimental Molecular Biosciences, set to launch in 2026, and teaches BSc and MSc pathways in Haematology while supporting outreach programs for disadvantaged backgrounds.
