Professor Tom Nilges conducts research on the synthesis and characterization of innovative inorganic materials, with a focus on solid state chemistry and associated analytical methods, including X-ray diffraction, conductivity analysis, and phase transformation analysis. He employs traditional Rietveld analysis of powders and performs anharmonic structure refinement for single crystals. His research group explores new cathode materials, ion conductors, and battery technology, as well as thermoelectrics and poly-anion compounds, specifically phosphorus and tellurium-based materials. The group's main objective is to identify and optimize new materials that enhance energy efficiency. Professor Nilges studied chemistry at the University of Siegen and the University of Aberdeen before completing his PhD at the University of Siegen in 2001. He has worked as a research associate at the universities of Regensburg and Münster and has experience managing subprojects within a university priority research program. He completed his postdoctoral teaching qualification at the University of Münster in 2007 and has held a visiting professorship at the University of Bordeaux, France. Professor Nilges has been a professor at the Technical University of Munich since July 2010.
