Biography

Tom Woerner-Powell's interdisciplinary research examines the religio-political dimensions of Islamic thought and the Muslim experience in colonial and post-colonial contexts, exploring the confluences and boundaries between ostensibly religious and political practices. His work engages with ongoing representations of Islam and Muslims within the category of ‘religion’ in the modern period, with a particular focus on the political effects of hermeneutic contexts and discourses surrounding mysticism, religiously sanctioned violence, and principled pacifism. Tom is currently involved in writing that explores the varieties of pacifism and nonviolence in contemporary Islam, leading an international AHRC-funded research project. He has been educated at prestigious institutions including the Universities of Oxford, Durham, and Damascus, and is multilingual, speaking English, German, Arabic, French, and Irish.
