Biography

Tom Rainforth is an Associate Professor of Statistical Machine Learning at the University of Oxford, leading the RainML Research Lab. He also serves as a Tutorial Fellow at Mansfield College and is a Principal Investigator on the ERC Starting Grant project 'Data-Driven Algorithms for Data Acquisition', funded by the UKRI Horizon Guarantee Scheme, running from March 2024 to February 2029. Tom joined the University in 2017, initially working as a postdoctoral researcher with Yee Whye Teh from September 2017 to August 2019. He subsequently held a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ Church College, focusing on Computer Science, before transitioning to Florence Nightingale Bicentennial Fellow Tutor in Statistics and Probability from January 2020 to February 2024. From March to August 2024, he will be a Senior Research Fellow funded by his own ERC grant. His academic background includes a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and a D.Phil. from Oxford, where he was supervised by Frank Wood and Michael Osborne, concentrating on probabilistic programming and Monte Carlo methods. Additionally, he has experience working with the Ferrari Formula 1 team.
