Biography

Tom Recht is a lecturer in the Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies at the University of British Columbia. He specializes in Ancient Greek, Latin, and Biblical Hebrew, reflecting his diverse background in linguistics and classical studies. Tom received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015, where he focused on the pragmatic significance of word order in Greek. Tom has also directed intensive summer workshops in Greek and Latin at Berkeley. His research interests encompass Indo-European historical linguistics, literary style and genre, pedagogy for Greek and Latin, and the intricacies of Greek word order. Tom joined the faculty at UBC in the summer of 2025 and continues to contribute to the fields of linguistics and classical literature through his teaching and research efforts.
