Professor Tom Scott currently serves as a Professor in the Materials Interface Analysis Centre at the University of Bristol. He obtained his M.Sci. with honors from Bristol and a PhD focusing on geochemistry and iron-bearing minerals. With over 60 published papers and 3 patents, his research primarily revolves around ageing, corrosion characterization, and radioactive materials within engineered environmental systems. He has notably led projects for the Sellafield UK Centre of Expertise for Uranium and Reactive Metals, where he successfully developed and deployed novel radiation detection technologies over the past five years. Noteworthy innovations include the Advanced Airborne Radiation Monitoring (AARM) system, which received the RAEng ERA award for innovation in 2014, and a unique diamond-based radiation detection system aimed at future nuclear energy applications. His current research interests extend to corrosion behavior in structural materials, particularly in reactor storage environments, funded by associations with AWE, CERN, and EDF Energy, among others. Professor Scott is also involved in research projects aimed at environmental remediation of heavy metals and radionuclides, further emphasizing his expertise in the field of nuclear materials and safety.
