Biography

Tom Smeets is a full professor in Clinical Psychology at the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Tilburg University. He heads the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology. Since January 2023, he has served as the national coordinator for the research programme "Mental Disorders" initiated by the Council of Deans in Social Sciences. His ancillary activities include being a Board Member for RINO Zuid from 2021 to 2029 and a Board Member of the Experimental PsychoPathology (EPP) from 2020 to 2029. Tom is a Grant Reviewer for various agencies including NWO, ZonMW, DFG, FNRS, NSF, and NIAS-Lorentz. His expertise lies in the domains of learning, memory abnormalities, stress, and trauma related to the development and maintenance of mental disorders. He has received several NWO grants, including the Brain Cognition talent grant, and has conducted investigations into the interplay of neurological, psychophysiological, and psychological markers of resiliency in stress-related mental disorders, focusing on multiple memory systems, as well as studies on acute stress effects and excessive avoidance.
