Biography

Tom Smith is a Senior Research Fellow at University College London in the Marine Research Group. He holds the position of deputy program director for the Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture MSc programs and teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to joining UCL, Tom worked as a Senior Naval Architect at BMT and is a Chartered Engineer and member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA). His research primarily focuses on underwater radiated noise, cavitation, and multiphase flow physics, utilizing both numerical and experimental methods. He conducts field trials at sea to measure underwater radiated noise from marine vessels and collaborates closely with the marine industry to enhance the understanding of underwater noise and cavitation in real-world environments. Tom has presented at international events on issues addressed by the International Maritime Organisation and was awarded the Sir Donald Gosling Award by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) in 2022.
