Biography

Tom van der Meer is a full professor of Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in political trust, electoral behavior, legitimacy, inequality, and citizenship. He has co-directed the Dutch Parliamentary Election Study since 2015 and is the director of the Dutch Local Election Study. Van der Meer's research has been published in a variety of national and international journals, focusing on themes such as electoral volatility, social capital, citizen participation, and quantitative research methods. In 2017, he co-edited the Handbook of Political Trust and published a critically acclaimed book discussing the supposed crisis in Dutch democracy. His research is supported by several grants from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), exploring topics like electoral trust and the impact of ethnic diversity on social cohesion. Van der Meer holds an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Leiden and a PhD in Social Sciences from Radboud University Nijmegen, and has a B.A. in History from the University of Leiden. He actively engages with public opinion and citizen participation research, having worked extensively at the Netherlands Institute for Social Research prior to joining the University of Amsterdam in 2010.
