Tom Watts is a Research Fellow at the OneHealth Microbiology Research Lab within the Biomedicine Discovery Institute at Monash University. His research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis and host-pathogen interactions, particularly the persistence of pathogens in the environment and the molecular biology of mobile genetic elements. Tom earned his PhD from Monash University in 2019, where he investigated the conjugative potential and persistence mechanisms of Clostridium perfringens. Following his doctorate, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, studying population heterogeneity and surface structures of the pathogen Enterococcus faecalis under the supervision of Professor Kimberly Kline. In 2022, Tom joined Professor Chris Greening's lab at Monash University. His interests include infection biology, bacterial metabolism, and environmental microbiology. He leads projects exploring the interactions between clinically relevant pathogens and host tissues, focusing on metabolism and immune evasion strategies of pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, he investigates gut microbiome metabolism and the persistence of microorganisms in urban water environments.
