Biography

Tom Zanker is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Western Australia. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and pursued doctoral studies at Princeton University, where he completed his Ph.D. His academic career also includes a position as College Fellow at Harvard University and teaching roles at Amherst College. Since joining the University of Western Australia in 2025, Zanker has engaged in numerous scholarly projects and has a diverse range of research interests that include Latin literature from the centuries BC to AD, early Greek poetry, contemporary linguistics, the philosophy of language, as well as intellectual history and the reception of Greco-Roman antiquity. His notable publications explore the origins and meanings of Greek and Latin vocabulary, metaphors in early Greek poetry, and the influence of classical studies on modern Filipino arts and literature. Zanker is currently involved in editing a volume on the relationship between Horace and Seneca, and he is contributing to a new Loeb edition of Horace's works. He has received several awards, including a visiting fellowship at the Center for Advanced Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 2022 and a College Fellowship at Harvard in 2010.
