Biography

Tomás Dorta is a practicing architect and designer whose research interests include the integration of new technologies into the design process, co-design development, and the application of virtual reality as a visualization tool to enhance the design workflow. He obtained his doctorate in 2001, focusing on the impact of virtual reality on design processes. Dorta has received extensive funding from Canadian federal and provincial research grant organizations and has presented his work at numerous international scientific conferences and in various scientific journals. In 2003, he joined the School of Design at Université de Montréal, where he became a full professor in 2017. His teaching portfolio includes design research, bionics, co-design, and industrial design studios, particularly emphasizing interaction design and collaboration. In 2021, Dorta was appointed as an affiliate professor of architecture at the Stuckeman School of Penn State University, where he continues to lead the Design Research Laboratory, Hybridlab, which he founded in 2008. He also serves as a senior editor for the journal 'Designing', published by Sage, and is a member of the editorial board for the journal 'CoDesign'.
