Tomasz Hueckel received his master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Technology in Gdansk, Poland, in 1968, followed by a Ph.D. in applied mechanics from the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, in 1974, and a D.Sc. in physical sciences from the University of Grenoble, France, in 1985. He began his research career at the Polish Academy of Sciences, taught at the University of Rome, and held a position at the University of Technology in Milan before joining ISMES, a research institute in Bergamo, Italy, where he focused on geomechanical aspects of nuclear waste disposal in clays. Dr. Hueckel joined Duke University in 1987. His research interests include theoretical soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and environmental geomechanics, particularly involving fundamental aspects of soil drying and cracking, as well as stability localization in geomechanical systems. He has heavily engaged in international research collaborations and served on the editorial boards of various academic journals, notably as co-editor of Geomechanics Energy Environment. He has published extensively in renowned journals and contributed to numerous books on the state of the art in geomechanics. His ongoing projects address challenges like thermo-plasticity and the effects of chemical interactions in geomechanics, focusing on applications related to sustainable energy and environmental safety in the context of geotechnical engineering.
