Tomasz Hueckel received his Master's degree in civil engineering from the University of Technology in Gdansk, Poland, in 1968, and went on to earn a Ph.D. in applied mechanics from the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw in 1974, followed by a D.Sc. in physical sciences from the University of Grenoble, France, in 1985. He began his research career at the Polish Academy of Sciences and taught at the University of Rome and the University of Technology in Milan before joining ISMES, a research institute in Bergamo, Italy, where he focused on geomechanical aspects of nuclear waste disposal in clays. He moved to Duke University in 1987, where his research interests include theoretical soil mechanics, rock mechanics, environmental geomechanics, and the theory of plasticity. His current projects explore thermo-plasticity and chemo-plasticity in clays as well as the mechanical behavior of materials that compose chemically reacting solids and liquids. His work also addresses fundamental issues such as soil drying and cracking, soil aging, and healing, coupled with innovative modeling approaches.
