Dr. Tomasz Mrowka

Biography

Tomasz Mrowka is a Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He graduated from MIT and received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988, under the supervision of Clifford Taubes and Robin Kirby. He joined the MIT mathematics faculty as a professor in 1996 and has held faculty appointments at Stanford and Caltech from 1994 to 1996. Mrowka's research interests primarily focus on problems in differential geometry and gauge theory. He has chaired the Graduate Student Committee from 1999 to 2002 and the Pure Mathematics Committee from 2004 to 2015, and he served as the Department Head from 2014 to 2017. In his distinguished career, he was a Sloan fellow and was selected for the Clay Mathematics Visiting Professorship in 1995. Mrowka received the Veblen Prize in Geometry from the American Mathematical Society in 2007, jointly with Peter Kronheimer, for their contributions to low-dimensional topology and the development of deep analytical techniques. His book, 'Monopoles and Manifolds', published by Cambridge University Press, received the Joseph Doob Prize from AMS in 2011. He was appointed the Singer Professor of Mathematics in 2007, serving until 2017, and received the Simons Fellowship in Mathematics in 2017. In 2018, he delivered a plenary address at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro. Mrowka has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007) and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2015. In 2023, he was awarded the Leroy P. Steele Prize for Seminal Contribution to Research for his joint paper with Peter Kronheimer, 'Gauge Theory of Embedded Surfaces, I', published in Topology in 1993.
