Dr. Tomi Akinyemiju

Biography

Tomi Akinyemiju is a Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences and a Global Health Research Professor at Duke University, specializing in cancer epidemiology, cancer biology, and health disparities. With an impressive portfolio, Akinyemiju has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and has been a pivotal figure in advancing the understanding of cancer health disparities, particularly focusing on the roles of race and associated biological mechanisms. As Vice-Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in her department and Associate Director for Community Outreach at the Duke Cancer Institute, she leads efforts to build diverse coalitions aimed at health equity. Akinyemiju's research has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health and other organizations, allowing her to mentor numerous trainees and junior faculty, particularly from underrepresented minorities. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is dedicated to developing evidence-based interventions through extensive collaboration with community organizations, policymakers, and health systems.
