Biography

Tommy J. Curry joined the Philosophy Department at the University of Edinburgh in Fall 2019. His research interests include Africana Philosophy and the Black Radical Tradition, with specializations in 19th-century ethnology, Critical Race Theory, Social Political Theory, and Black Male Studies. He is the author of 'Man-Not: Race, Class, Genre, Dilemmas of Black Manhood' (Temple University Press, 2017), which won the 2018 American Book Award. Curry has also authored 'The White Man’s Burden: Josiah Royce’s Quest for Philosophy of Racial Empire' (SUNY Press, 2018) and edited the book series 'Black Male Studies: Series Exploring Paradoxes of Racially Subjugated Males' at Temple University Press. His ongoing research investigates how Western nations create civil societies that perpetuate racial phobics, focusing on the intersection of sexual violence against racialized men in contexts of police, war, and genocidal conflicts. He aims to theorize the permanence of anti-Black racism within white supremacy and its implications for political theory. Curry has received recognition such as being placed among the Top 15 Emerging Scholars in the United States in 2018 and earning the Alain Locke Award from the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy in 2017. He previously served as president of Philosophy Born, a prominent Black philosophy organization in the United States.
