Biography

Tommy Tse is an Associate Professor in the Global Cross-Media Cultures (GCMC) program at the University of Amsterdam's Department of Media Studies. With a focus on East Asia’s media cultural industries and consumer culture, he has developed a research agenda that intersects media cultural studies, cultural production mediation, creative labor studies, and consumer culture. Tse has received prestigious grants, including the European Research Council's Consolidator Grant for his project, "Fashioning Power South-South Interaction: Re-thinking Creativity, Authenticity, Cultural Mediation Consumer Agency China-Africa Fashion Value Chains." His work includes extensive ethnographic research in Hong Kong, China, Korea, and Africa, where he investigates the nuanced societal impacts of creative economies. His publications appear in top-tier journals, and he holds editorial board positions in various academic journals. In addition to his academic contributions, Tse is actively involved in teaching across several institutions and has received multiple nominations and awards for his teaching excellence, including the Social Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the Amsterdam Young Academy and has served as a visiting scholar at renowned institutions including the London College of Fashion and the University College London. Currently, he supervises several PhD students focusing on topics related to digital media, fashion, and cultural production.
