Biography

Tomoko Akaike, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Washington and a dermatologist at the UW Medical Center – Roosevelt Dermatology Center, as well as at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Dr. Akaike's research focuses on Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), for which she leads clinical trials and participates in translational research. Since joining the Nghiem Lab in 2018, Dr. Akaike has taken on demanding roles that involve impactful leadership in teaching and research concerning cancer immunology. Her significant contributions include 13 peer-reviewed journal publications, seven of which she authored, and she is cited in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. She has also authored textbook chapters and received numerous awards for her work, including the Everett C. Fox, MD Memorial Lecture Award in 2019 and the Conquer Cancer Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology in 2022. Dr. Akaike has a strong educational background with an MD from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine in Japan and has completed various residencies and fellowships in Dermatology and clinical research. Her research interests encompass biomarkers, circulating tumor DNA testing, cutaneous lymphoma, and melanoma.
