Biography

Ton Koonen is a full professor in Electro-Optical Communications and the Chair of Broadband Communication Networks at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research focuses on areas including optical fiber technology, telecommunications, and broadband optical networks. Koonen has led numerous European and national R&D projects on dynamically reconfigurable hybrid fiber access networks and fiber-wireless systems. His current research interests involve optical fiber-supported in-building networks, optical access networks, and advanced communication techniques such as spatial division multiplexing. Notably, his group developed a Wi-Fi network that utilizes infrared light to achieve transmission speeds of 42.8 Gb/s, significantly outpacing traditional networks. Koonen holds an MSc in Electrical Engineering from TU/e, has worked with Philips Telecommunications and Bell Laboratories, and has contributed to over 250 academic publications. He has been recognized as a fellow of multiple prestigious organizations and has received grants for advanced research initiatives.
