Tonia Vincent studied medicine at University College London, qualifying in 1993. She trained as a junior doctor in London, specializing in Rheumatology. In 1998, she undertook her PhD at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology under Professor Jeremy Saklatvala, completing it in 2002. She continued her career at the Kennedy Institute as a Wellcome Trust clinician scientist and subsequently as an Arthritis Research UK Senior Fellow. In 2012, after the Kennedy Institute moved to the University of Oxford, she was appointed Professor of Musculoskeletal Biology. Tonia directs the Centre for Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis, funded by Versus Arthritis. Her research interests encompass pathways that drive mechanosensitive responses in cartilage and the role of the pericellular matrix in modulating osteoarthritis responses in vivo. Her group has worked on the spontaneous late osteoarthritis pain in murine models, defining the role of nerve growth factor in this process. She led the STEpUP OA consortium in 2019, the largest international effort to date to define molecular endotypes of osteoarthritis. In addition to her research, she remains clinically active, overseeing osteoarthritis clinics and a multidisciplinary clinic for Marfan Syndrome.
