Tony Durst is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Ottawa in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences. His research primarily involves the isolation and evaluation of natural products of medicinal interest, particularly from plants native to Central America, with a special focus on Costa Rica. His group has worked on active compounds that lead to chemically modified structures aiming to enhance their activity. Currently, he is concentrating on anti-anxiety compounds and identifying anti-fungal agents that exhibit activity related to Type II diabetes. Durst's work is interdisciplinary, carried out in collaboration with other experts in the field, including Prof. J.T. Arnason from the Department of Biology and Prof. J. Wright from the Department of Chemistry at Carleton University. His research interests cover organic biological chemistry, synthetic medicinal organic chemistry, organo-sulfurous composite molecules, synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, natural products, anti-anxiety compounds, and designed antioxidants.
