Biography

Tony Gibbs is an Emeritus Professor at Macquarie University, known for his extensive research in Renaissance literature, modern drama, Irish literature, and cultural politics. He holds undergraduate degrees with honors from the University of Melbourne and the University of Oxford, as well as a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Letters from Oxford. Gibbs became a Macquarie academic in 1982 and has since been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, contributing significantly as a member of the Academy Council and serving as its Vice-President and Editor Chair of the English Electoral Section. He has also been recognized for his work by receiving multiple grants from the Australian Research Council and by serving on the ARC’s Social Sciences and Humanities Panel. Gibbs is recognized internationally as an authority on the life and work of playwright George Bernard Shaw. His principal publications include 'Sir William Davenant: Shorter Poems, Songs, Plays, Masques' (1972), 'Art and Mind: Shaw' (1983), and 'Bernard Shaw: Life' (2005), the latter of which was awarded the Robert Rhodes Prize for Literature by the American Conference for Irish Studies, and acknowledged in prestigious academic awards. His academic interests encompass the intellectual, cultural, and social histories of literature from the Renaissance to the twentieth century.
