Biography

Educator and conductor Tony Nam-Hai Leong completed his Ph.D. in Music Education at the University of Toronto. He advocates for well-being and social change through accessible lifelong music-making, with community engagement as central to his work. He serves as the Chairman of the Orchestra/Strings Division for MusicFest Canada and is an Executive Member of the Canadian Music Educators’ Association. Leong is a past-president and board director of the Ontario Music Educators’ Association and a co-founding director of the Ontario Strings Association. He has also served as an educational clinician for Conn-Selmer and was a past board member of the Coalition for Music Education in Canada. With a strong passion for public post-secondary education, he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Teaching Stream at the University of Toronto Scarborough and has taught at Queen’s University as well as heading the Arts Department at Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute. His research interests include intersections of string music education, technology, adolescents, community music, and Music Life.
