Biography

Professor Tony Pollard is the Director of the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow. He specializes in Conflict History Archaeology and convenes the MSc in Conflict Archaeology & Heritage. His work has involved various battlefield-related archaeological projects across the UK, mainland Europe, Africa, and South America. Pollard's research interests span 18th-century warfare, particularly the Jacobite rebellions in Scotland, as well as 20th-century conflicts including both World Wars. He has directed programs for the Australian Army to survey and evaluate World War mass graves, notably at Fromelles in France. His projects have included the investigation of the Culloden battlefield, the identification of the site of the 1314 Battle of Bannockburn, and excavations related to the escape tunnels of the Great Escape from the notorious German POW camp, Stalag Luft III in Poland. Current research interests involve the 1982 Falklands War and its historical significance. In addition to his academic pursuits, Pollard co-directs the Waterloo Uncovered project, which brings together archaeologists and injured military veterans to explore the famous battlefield. He has also led Glasgow University's Great War Project to examine the impact of the university community during the Great War. Professor Pollard has appeared on television and radio, contributing to greater public awareness of battlefield archaeology, including his participation in the BBC series 'Men in the Trench.' He is widely published and has supervised PhD students on a diverse range of historical and archaeological topics.
