Dr. Toral Gathani

Biography

Toral Gathani is an Associate Professor in the Cancer Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford and a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Her primary research interests revolve around the intersection of ethnicity and breast cancer, focusing on health systems and early cancer detection and diagnosis. She is the Principal Investigator of a Cancer Research UK-funded project that investigates ethnicity and breast cancer. Dr. Gathani has been actively involved in the NHS Breast Screening Programme in England as a co-chair of the Research Innovation Development Advisory Committee. She has also contributed to various committees related to breast cancer research and policy, including the UK Breast Cancer Clinical Studies Group. A notable recognition of her work includes being awarded the prestigious Hunterian Lecture by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2022. Dr. Gathani's contributions to medical education are exemplified by her role as a Senior Research Fellow at Green Templeton College, Oxford. She completed her medical degrees at the University of St Andrews and Guy’s St Thomas’ Medical School and has extensive experience working in clinical research in both the UK and India.
