Biography

Torben Lykke Sørensen is a Clinical Professor in Ophthalmology at the University of Copenhagen and a Senior Research Consultant. He has been a consultant at the Department of Ophthalmology at Zealand University Hospital since 2011, specializing in medical retinal diseases. His primary research areas include eye diseases, particularly retinal diseases and immunology, focusing on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, and retinal vein occlusions. He currently leads studies on systemic inflammation in retinal diseases, especially AMD, and has projects analyzing the innate, adaptive, and aging immune systems. He has a keen interest in chemokine biology and conducts clinical studies on retinal diseases. In addition, he supervises PhD students and various research training programs. His teaching responsibilities include leading courses in medical retinal diseases and eye diseases at both bachelor and master’s levels in medicine. He serves on the Academic Council at Zealand University Hospital and holds editorial positions within peer-reviewed journals. He has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Acta Ophthalmologica 100 years honorary Gold Medal in 2023.
