Dr. Toril Moi

Biography

Toril Moi is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor at Duke University, held since 1999. She has extensive expertise in literature, feminist theory, and philosophy, with a particular interest in the intersections between literature and aesthetics, and the ordinary language philosophy tradition of thinkers like Wittgenstein, Cavell, and Austin. Her notable works include 'Sexual/Textual Politics: Feminist Literary Theory' (1985), which has significantly impacted feminist literary theory. Moi's research also focuses on theater, literature, modernism, and the emergence of literary movements in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over the years, she has been associated with multiple academic disciplines, serving as a professor in Literature, English, Romance Studies, Philosophy, and Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies. In addition to her academic roles, Moi has been recognized as a Fellow of the British Academy and continues to contribute to literature through publications, essays, and book reviews.
