Dr. Torkild Thanem

Biography

Torkild Thanem is a Professor of Management & Organization Studies at Stockholm University. He has extensive experience teaching and supervising students across various levels, including undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral post-experience programs, focusing on management and organizational change. His current teaching includes doctoral and master’s courses in qualitative research methods. Thanem's research explores how human bodies become subjects and objects of power and knowledge within organizational contexts, emphasizing ethical engagement in organizational life. He investigates issues pertaining to marginalized groups, such as trans individuals and homeless people, while connecting societal issues to personal experiences. His work aims to generate new theoretical insights into the challenges faced by individuals in contemporary organizations. Thanem has received funding from the Swedish Research Council and is involved in ethnographic studies examining organizational cultures, particularly in big tech environments. His recent co-authored publication, 'Embodied Research Methods,' is a significant contribution to the field. His research interests include fitness cultures at work, organizational culture in hybrid offices, transgender work, embodied research methods, and leadership ethics in organizations.
