Biography

Torsten Neubert has an extensive academic and professional history in the field of Space Science, with particular expertise in lightning phenomena and electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere. Educated at Stanford University and the University of Michigan between 1984 and 1994, he contributed to the development of a 3D particle-in-cell code to simulate electron beam cloud injections. His notable career includes a significant role as a project scientist for Ørsted, Denmark's satellite, under the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), where he focused on studying small-scale, field-aligned, electric currents in the upper atmosphere. Currently based at DTU Space, he leads the ASIM experiment on the International Space Station that measures lightning and high-altitude discharges like red sprites and blue jets. Neubert is dedicated to advancing our understanding of atmospheric science and is now exploring neuromorphic imaging technology which promises enhanced imaging of electric discharges with microsecond time resolution. He has collaborated on multiple projects regarding the observations of thunderstorms and lightning activities.
