Biography

Torsten Suel is a Professor and Director of the Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. Program at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. His research focuses on web search engines, scalable information retrieval, databases, distributed computation, algorithms, data compression, parallel computation, and experimental algorithmics. He holds a Diplom degree from the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin. Suel has been a faculty member at NYU since 1998, and has also held postdoctoral visiting positions at NEC Research Institute, UC Berkeley, and Bell Labs. In 2008, he served as a Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research in Santa Clara, CA, before returning to NYU. His notable publications include works presented at top conferences such as the ACM SIGIR Conference and the ACM Conference on Web Search and Data Mining. Suel's contributions to the field have earned him recognition, including the NSF Career Award and a Paper Award at the WWW Conference in 2005.
