Biography

Professor Torsten Thomas is an accomplished academic in the field of Microbiology with a focus on the role of microbial communities in marine environments. He obtained his Masters degree from Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms University Bonn in 1996 and completed his PhD at the University of New South Wales in 2001. After working as a Senior Scientist at Nucleics Pty Ltd from 2001 to 2004, he returned to academia as a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Marine Bio-Innovation at UNSW and has held various positions throughout his career including Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor. In 2017, he was promoted to Professor and has directed research that explores microbiomes and their interactions with marine species. His current projects investigate microbial symbiosis in marine sponges, carbon-fixing microorganisms in deep-sea environments, and the application of probiotics in marine aquaculture. He supervises several postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, contributing significantly to the understanding of microbiomes and their ecological properties.
