Biography

Toyin Agbetu is a lecturer in Social Anthropology at University College London, specializing in race, ethnicity, nationalism, and coloniality. Through a critical pedagogy and reparatory social justice approach, Toyin addresses issues of systemic racism, structural violence, and algorithmic discrimination. He is also an award-winning filmmaker and museologist who promotes anti-racist and inclusive practices across academia, local government, and museums. In 2024, Toyin developed a racial literacy training module for the NHS’s Integrated Training Practice programme. His research interests encompass institutional activism, decoloniality, community resistance, structural violence, and abolitionism. His doctoral research examined the governmental policies and practices that transform cultural institutions as forums for social justice, framed as Exhibitionary Praxis. With over twenty years of experience as a grassroots community educator, he founded Ligali, a Pan-African organization dedicated to challenging Afriphobia in public spaces and services. He has played a substantial role in numerous community projects and has contributed to the annual African Remembrance events at City Hall in London. He also participated in various initiatives addressing violent racialized policing and digital rights. Toyin advocates for integrating education with countercultural art forms to create a human rights-centered world.
