An interdisciplinary researcher committed to engaging patients and the public in research through applied science expertise. The research focus includes biological factors and mechanisms that affect the progression of common conditions in older age. Tracey Newman has published over 60 scientific papers in leading multidisciplinary journals, collaborating with scientists, clinicians, and public-private sectors. She completed her PhD studying the associations between aging and Alzheimer's disease, joining the CNS Inflammation group led by Professor Hugh Perry at the Centre for Biological Sciences. Her work has employed in-vivo models to explore how inflammation in the brain exacerbates injuries related to Multiple Sclerosis and other acute injuries. Tracey has received support through the MRC Discipline Hopping Grant, initiating collaboration with Professor Hywel Morgan in Electronics and Computer Science to develop devices that control neuronal growth in culture via micro-nanofabrication methods. She has led an EU grant (FP7) work package on organic nanoparticles and drug delivery, cooperating with Professor Paul Dalton (Wurtzburg, Germany). Her ongoing work improves hearing outcomes for cochlear implantation, ultimately elevating patient experiences and outcomes by enhancing interdisciplinary approaches.
