Dr. Tracy Smith

Biography

Tracy K. Smith is the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory and Professor of African American Studies at the Harvard Radcliffe Institute. She is renowned for her contributions to American poetry, specifically focusing on African American poetry, creative writing, literary criticism, and translation. Smith obtained her B.A. from Harvard College in 1994 and later completed her M.F.A. at Columbia University in 1997. She is currently accepting graduate student advisees, reflecting her commitment to mentoring emerging poets and scholars. Smith has authored several notable works, including 'Fear Poetry Perilous' (2025), 'Free Captives: Plea American Soul' (2023), 'Color: New Selected Poems' (2021), 'Wade in the Water' (2018), 'Ordinary Light' (2015), 'Life on Mars' (2011), 'Duende' (2007), and 'The Body's Question' (2003). Her literary achievements and dedication to exploring the depths of human experience through poetry have cemented her status as a significant voice in contemporary literature.
