Biography

Professor Dixon received his B.A. in Communication Studies from UCLA, followed by an M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is a media effects scholar specializing in the prevalence of stereotypes and the impact of stereotypical imagery in mass media on audience members. In 2013, he was a Visiting Philanthropy Faculty Scholar at the Clinton School of Public Service. In 2019, he became an African American scholar inducted as a fellow into the International Communication Association, a prestigious honor in the field of Communication. Professor Dixon has published dozens of articles in leading Communication journals and has received multiple top paper awards from the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association. He serves on the editorial boards of prominent journals, including Communication Monographs and Human Communication Research. His current research investigates racial stereotyping in television news, focusing on content effects, stereotypes, and counter-stereotypes during major events. He is actively involved with community initiatives to address racial inequity.
