TJ Salway is a social epidemiologist who works to understand and improve the health of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (2S/LGBTQ) populations. From 2019 to 2020, he testified before standing committees of the Canadian House of Commons to inform federal policy aimed at promoting 2S/LGBTQ health equity, which resulted in the passage of Bill C-4, making it a crime to perpetrate anti-2S/LGBTQ practices, otherwise known as “conversion therapy.” He directs the REAFFIRM Collaborative, an interdisciplinary team studying the effects of 2S/LGBTQ identity (in)validation, and founded MindMapBC.ca, a 2S/LGBTQ-affirming mental health service finder. His research interests include understanding population health inequities in the context of social stigma, utilizing a range of approaches such as epidemiology and qualitative research to explore the experiences of sexual minority people dealing with co-occurring health disparities. One focus is on mental health outcomes and their relationship with sexual health. Additionally, he investigates the correct selection and measurement of stigmatized populations in health research, as social stigma often affects the accuracy of data collection. Furthermore, Salway collaborates with public health partners to address the unmet healthcare needs of sexual minority clients in various settings, including sexual health clinics, to promote early and preventive mental healthcare.
