Biography

R. Trebor Scholz is a professor known for his work in cooperative entrepreneurship in the digital economy. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Plymouth and is widely recognized for developing the concept of "platform cooperatives," which are worker-owned digital platforms aimed at promoting economic, social, labor, and environmental justice. With over a million workers worldwide employed by platform cooperatives, his work highlights the growing impact of alternative economic models. Scholz is a global keynote speaker who has delivered numerous talks to diverse audiences and has received support from organizations such as the European Commission, the Rockefeller Foundation, and Google.org. His publications include "Own," which won the Joyce Rothschild Book Award, and "Uberworked and Underpaid," both of which have been translated into multiple languages, contributing to the establishment of a new academic subfield known as Solidarity Tech. In 2018, he founded the Platform Cooperativism Consortium (PCC) at the New School and followed it with the Institute for Cooperative Digital Economy (ICDE) in 2019, which supports emerging scholars in the digital solidarity economy. Scholz has collaborated with partners in over 60 countries, promoting innovation on a global scale.
