Biography

Trent Walker is an Assistant Professor in Southeast Asian Studies and Thai, specializing in Theravada Buddhism. His research spans from the medieval period to the present, focusing on handwritten materials such as bark-paper documents, palm-leaf manuscripts, and stone inscriptions, as well as the performative realizations of speech, chant, and song. With extensive experience working with Thai, Khmer, Lanna, Lao, Pali, Sanskrit sources, and various Tai languages, he has made significant contributions to the field of Khmer literature. He authored 'Nirvana’s Time: Buddhist Songs Cambodia' published by Shambhala Publications in 2022 and co-edited 'Shadows Angkor: Cambodian Poetry, Prose, Performance Ages' released by the University of Hawai‘i Press in 2022. His recent publications encompass Thai literary history, Lao Shan exegesis, and Khmer epigraphy, while he is in the process of completing a monograph titled 'Classical Reading, Vernacular Writing: Bitextual History Southeast Asian Buddhism'. Walker's teaching interests cover South and Southeast Asian texts and musical genres, exploring the intersections of language, religion, and meaning.
